faq

Am I eligible for accommodation at Sydney University Village?

All University of Sydney students are eligible to apply for accommodation at Sydney University Village, including research assistants and full-time, part-time, undergraduate and postgraduate students.

ACCOMMODATION

Are pets allowed?

No pets, including fish, may be kept in the Village. Additionally, residents are not permitted to bring animals into any building of the Village. This Rule does not apply to the extent that it restricts the keeping of a guide or hearing dog as set out in the Village Rules.

ACCOMMODATION

Are priorities given to particular students?

The Village hosts a diverse range of residents from all over the world and across Australia, and we see this as a true strength of our community. To ensure fairness, we don't give preference to any group over others. Therefore we encourage all applicants to submit the relevant forms as early as possible to avoid disappointment.

ACCOMMODATION

Can I choose my flatmates?

If you'd like to share an apartment with a friend, please specify this on your application form. Given our high demand, we can't guarantee to fulfill all requests, but we'll definitely try our best to accommodate you. One bedroom apartments and one bedroom studios are single occupancy only.

The earlier you and your friend apply, the easier it is for us to assign you to the same apartment.

ACCOMMODATION

Can I smoke in my apartment?

On Monday 30th January 2012, Sydney University introduced a Smoke Free Policy for all its campuses, http://sydney.edu.au/ohs/wellbeing/smoke-free.shtml. As the Village is part of the University Community and is located on University land, the policy will also be implemented at Sydney University Village. Please also refer to Village Rules. In recognition that some residents may still wish to smoke, Village Management sought and were granted approval from Campus Infrastructure Services for two designate smoking areas within the Village. See Village Reception for further details regarding designated smoking areas.

Can my partner live with me?

Spouses, partners, boyfriends or girlfriends can apply for accommodation at Sydney University Village, as long as they are students at the University of Sydney. Couples will be provided with individual rooms, however you can request to be allocated rooms in the same apartment.

ACCOMMODATION

Do you provide a cleaning service?

All residents are responsible for keeping their rooms and apartments clean. A cleaning service can be organised for a fee. Please enquire at Reception.

FACILITIES

Do you provide internet access?

Broadband connectivity is available in every bedroom at the Village. Once an account has been set up with the University, you should be able to access the internet, the Village intranet and the University intranet (charges apply). Details on how to set up an account are included in the Village Handbook.

Internet is provided through the University of Sydney. The Village will not charge for any ongoing usage of the Data Network or for any downloading of data. An annual data connection fee applies for this service.

Additional data can be purchased in the case you exceed your included 50GB per month allowance. For additional internet purchase options please click here.

FACILITIES

How close is Sydney University Village to the University and the CBD?

Sydney University Village is located on campus at the University of Sydney, metres from Newtown's most vibrant street of shops, restaurants and bars.

Regular buses from just outside the Village will take you directly to the CBD in approximately 15 minutes.

ACCOMMODATION

How is Sydney University Village different to private rental accommodation?

Sydney University Village offers an independent living experience in stylish, affordable accommodation, just minutes away from classes! At the same time, we ensure support is available 24 hours a day, and offer a fantastic residential life program to help you live, learn and grow.

This means that you have the freedom to do what you want (within reason of course and subject to the Village Rules) and can enjoy the benefits of living in an exciting student community. You also have peace of mind knowing that there is always staff available to provide assistance.

In short, we offer a fantastic balance between support and independence!

ACCOMMODATION

How long are the residential agreements?

Sydney University Village runs on a 52 week residential agreement. This allows residents constant access to rooms and facilities mid year and throughout the summer period. It means you don't have to spend time and money moving and is especially convenient if you want to stay in the same room next year (subject to you reapplying during the reapplication period and Sydney University Village offering you a room).

If you choose to go away for the summer holiday, you can put your room in the letting pool and we'll endeavour to secure you a fee rebate by renting it to conference guests and other visitors. The rebate will be a portion of your residential fee, depending on the occupancy of all available rooms during the summer period.

ACCOMMODATION, FEES

Is catering available?

All apartments at Sydney University Village are self-catered. However a variety of meals and a selection of groceries can be purchased from the on-site convenience store and café.
